EVERYONE needs folate throughout their lifetime for optimal health.
In addition to food sources of folate (foods like orange juice and dark green leafy vegetables), women of childbearing age should get 400 micrograms of folic acid every day from fortified foods and/or a vitamin pill, regardless of pregnancy intentions.
Why? Because….
- Folic acid has been shown to reduce the risk for serious birth defects and possibly some chronic diseases.
- Almost half of all pregnancies are unplanned, so it’s important for women of childbearing age to get 400 micrograms of folic acid every day.
